Editorial services

While most of my projects involve both writing and editing, I can also provide editorial services to assist you in bringing your own writing into a cohesive whole. This is particularly useful when many authors contribute to a document, subject matter is complex or simply when time constraints preclude the "polishing" that professional documents require.

Manuscript assessment

The first step in the editorial process is assessing the level of editing needed, which informs project planning and costing. I also offer this as a stand-alone service and provide written advice on the further development of the manuscript.

Substantive editing

Substantive editing is carried out to ensure that the structure, content, style and language of the document are appropriate to its intended purpose and audience. This may include removing repetition, rearranging or summarising sections to achieve the most logical structure and rewriting sections to improve the flow of the discussion or provide a single authorial voice.

Copy editing

Copy editing involves assessing the document to confirm that content is clearly and acceptably expressed and that there is consistency in the use of language and formatting. This includes checking that cross-referencing is accurate, references are correctly cited and syntax, spelling, grammar and punctuation are correct.
